How to maintain your summer fitness regime

Lockdown is officially over and now that plans are a thing again, it’s easy to swap the gym for a trip to the local pub, that at-home workout for a much-need bottle of wine before your big night out, and that mountain climb for a sunny BBQ at your next-door neighbours.
Now that summer has arrived and we’re free to do what we want, we obviously don’t want to miss out on all the social events that are happening, but equally, we’re not gonna stand here and un-do all our hard work. It can take months for us to be ‘summer-body’ ready and we can’t just throw that away over a few fruity ciders in the beer garden!
The solution? Re-work your goals to get the best results from your summer fitness regime.
PLAN
Planning is key when it comes to sticking to a regime. As we’ve already established, it can be very easy to fall off track. The best way to avoid this from happening is to sit back, relax and plan the week ahead. Work out the times that you have free to squeeze in a walk or a trip to the gym, and if you can go with a friend, that’s even better! It has been proven that if we make plans with others, we’re more likely to hold ourselves accountable and less likely to bail on plans. That being said, we totally understand that unexpected situations crop up from time to time so don’t be too hard on yourself. Take the opportunity to enjoy yourself and maybe try and fit an extra 15 minutes into your next walk. As cliché as it sounds, doing something is better than doing nothing.

STEPS, STEPS, STEPS
Find yourself struggling to make it to your gym class? Don’t sweat it. Try adding a few more steps into your daily routine. Walking has been proven to be one of the most effective activities for weight loss. Experts recommend that we hit 10,000 steps a day and whilst that may sound a little daunting, there’s plenty of ways to boost your step-intake. Whether you plan on parking further away from the shops, walking to work instead of catching the bus, or simply taking your kids to the park during the summer holidays, there’s always a simple way to hit your daily target.
Top tip: Grab a coffee and meet your friend for a walk – you’ll hardly notice it’s exercise!

SET SMALL GOALS
Slow and steady wins the race. If you set yourself small, weekly goals then you’re more likely to stick to your regime. Especially now that holidays are a thing again – maybe you’re jetting off to a green-list country or trying out a UK staycation hotspot? Either way, having something to aim for will give you something positive to focus on. Also, remember to take into consideration how busy your social life is and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. After the last 18 months, we need to remember that life is for living.

FOOD AND ALCOHOL INTAKE
The sun is shining, the temperature is soaring and all you want is freshly chilled glass of white wine. We’ve all experienced this feeling. In a situation like this, the best thing to do is not deny yourself anything. The more we restrict ourselves, the more we tend to self-sabotage. Instead, plan treats such a wine, ice cream, cake etc into your food plan, or simply look for low-calorie or low-alcohol alternative. Your body will feel like it’s having a treat without throwing you off track!
Top Tip: Reach for high protein foods – they’ll keep you fuller for longer and reduce your cravings.

CHILL OUT
We’re all guilty of over-thinking and putting too much pressure on ourselves at times. This is when you usually fall off the wagon and go into self-destruct mode. Well, we’re not doing that this summer. We’ve just survived a pandemic You can put all the precautions in place that you want, but sometimes, a situation arises that we have no control over and this can seriously affect our fitness regime. In times like this, it’s best to breathe, deal with the situation on hand, and get back on track ASAP. Don’t dwell on what went wrong, focus on moving forward. After all, mental health is just as important our physical health.
